This station was opened in 2015 to aid Ebbw Vale’s economic regeneration. It is near the site of Tyllwyn Halt, on the Great Western Railway’s line from Newport to Ebbw Vale’s ‘low level’ station.

The main railway continues past the offices and through the Newtown Causeway to the GWR station in the top left corner.

You can see more photos and information about the GWR line on our page about the Newtown Causeway. The London & North Western Railway’s ‘high level’ station was near where the town clock stands today.

Ebbw Vale to Newport passenger trains ended in 1962 as British Railways prioritised freight trains to and from the steelworks and numerous collieries. Calls for Gwent County Council to introduce a new passenger service increased after the reopening of stations and railways in other areas – especially the Aberdare to Cardiff line in 1988 – demonstrated how new train services could aid regeneration by connecting post-industrial communities to major centres of employment.

Closure of Ebbw Vale steelworks in 2002 increased the need for economic regeneration. Blaenau Gwent County Borough Council led a consortium of local authorities which relaid the track and built new stations along the route. The initial terminus was Ebbw Vale Parkway. An hourly service to Cardiff Central began in February 2008. A feeder bus connected the station to the town centre but was withdrawn after a year.

Clearance of the steelworks site enabled new track, again funded by the Welsh Government, to be laid so that the trains could reach Ebbw Vale Town. The colour photo shows the new station in April 2015, with the steelworks General Offices behind.

Another investment programme created additional capacity between Llanhilleth and Crosskeys. This enabled Ebbw Vale to Newport trains to begin in January 2024. The hourly Transport for Wales trains to both Cardiff and Newport provide half-hourly connections between stations within the valley.
